What is directed attention?

What is directed-attention fatigue?

Involuntary attention
Involuntary or stimulus-driven attention is attracted more automatically by something interesting, novel, moving or emotionally significant.
A sudden noise may capture attention immediately. So might movement in the corner of a room, a dramatic video or a bird landing beside a window.
Not all involuntary attention is restorative. Some stimuli capture attention so strongly that they leave little room for reflection or disengagement.

What is soft fascination?
Fascination is the capacity of an environment or experience to attract attention with relatively little deliberate effort.
Soft fascination describes gentle engagement that holds some attention while leaving mental space available for reflection.

Soft fascination is often contrasted with hard fascination.
Hard fascination captures attention more completely. Fast-paced entertainment, dramatic events and highly stimulating games may all hold attention strongly. This does not make them inherently harmful. It simply means that they may leave less attentional space for reflection.
In one study exploring these distinctions, participants perceived walking in nature as softly fascinating and television as more strongly absorbing. However, soft fascination remains an underexamined mechanism. The evidence does not yet establish that it is the specific causal process responsible for cognitive improvements following nature exposure.
The four qualities of a restorative environment
Attention Restoration Theory identifies four characteristics associated with potentially restorative experiences: being away, fascination, extent and compatibility.
A setting does not become restorative merely because it looks calm. Restoration depends partly on the relationship between the person, the setting and the demands present at that moment.
1. Being away
Being away is the sense of psychological or physical distance from ordinary demands, routines and sources of attentional effort.
Travel can create this distance, but travel is not necessary.
Being away may come from:
- moving into a different room;
- leaving a work area;
- putting work equipment out of sight;

2. Fascination
Fascination refers to an environment’s ability to attract attention without requiring continuous deliberate control.
Within ART, softer fascination is considered particularly relevant because it combines interest with available mental space.
Fascination alone is not sufficient. An impressive view may capture attention, but the experience may still be demanding if the environment feels unsafe, crowded or incompatible with what the person needs.
3. Extent
Extent describes whether an environment feels sufficiently coherent and substantial to function as a complete setting rather than an isolated object.
Extent can include:
- a sense of continuity;
- enough detail to sustain exploration;
- an understandable relationship between different elements;
- the feeling of entering another context.
A setting does not have to be physically large. A small garden can have extent when it offers a coherent experience with enough depth and variation to remain engaging.
Applying extent to individual activities, such as craft or reading, is plausible but interpretative. The concept was developed primarily in relation to environments.
4. Compatibility
Compatibility is the fit between the person, the environment and what the person wants or needs to do.
A woodland may be restorative for someone who feels comfortable walking alone. The same setting may be demanding for someone concerned about difficult terrain, insects, poor lighting or personal safety.
A restorative opportunity therefore depends on more than the objective presence of trees or water.
Compatibility may be influenced by:
- physical accessibility;
- personal preference;
- cultural associations;
- familiarity;
- sensory sensitivity;
- safety;
- weather;
- available time;
- the person’s intended activity.
The four components are interdependent. A place can be fascinating but incompatible, or physically distant without creating the psychological experience of being away.
Why is nature considered restorative?
Natural environments often provide several characteristics proposed by Attention Restoration Theory at the same time.
They may offer:
- subtle movement;
- sensory variation;
- repeated but non-identical patterns;
- opportunities for unstructured observation;
- distance from workplace cues;
- coherent landscapes;
- activities without an imposed outcome.
A tree canopy, moving water or changing sky can attract attention without asking the observer to make repeated decisions.
However, “nature” is not one uniform condition. A quiet local park, a crowded beach, a difficult mountain path and a photograph of a forest are very different exposures.
Natural settings may also involve noise, uncomfortable weather, difficult terrain, crowds or perceived danger. Whether the setting feels restorative depends partly on compatibility and context.
Nature should therefore not be described as a universal intervention that affects everyone in the same way.
What does the scientific evidence suggest?
One influential experiment by Marc Berman and colleagues compared cognitive performance after participants walked through either a natural or urban environment. A second experiment compared responses after viewing images of nature and urban settings. The researchers reported improvements on selected attention and working-memory measures following the natural conditions.
These findings contributed to the wider popularity of Attention Restoration Theory. Later research has tested real walks, photographs, videos, window views, virtual environments and indoor natural elements.
The overall evidence is more nuanced than individual positive studies may imply.
A 2016 systematic review examined 31 studies comparing natural and non-natural settings using objective attention measures. Significant positive effects were found for three measures, including forward and backward digit span and Trail Making Test B. Ten other meta-analyses did not show marked beneficial effects. The authors highlighted small samples, inconsistent methods and uncertainty about which aspects of attention may be affected.
A larger 2025 meta-analysis included 273 outcomes from 80 studies. On average, cognitive improvement was greater after nature exposure than after non-natural comparison conditions. Working memory and attentional control were the only domains showing reliable benefits, although differences between cognitive domains were not necessarily statistically distinct. Overall effects were small and highly heterogeneous.
This distinction matters.
The evidence provides support for a modest relationship between some forms of nature exposure and selected cognitive outcomes. It does not conclusively demonstrate that:
- all attention improves;
- every natural environment is restorative;
- soft fascination causes the improvement;
- the same duration works for everyone;
- subjective calm always corresponds with objective cognitive recovery.

Is attention restoration the same as stress recovery?

An activity can be enjoyable without restoring directed attention. It can also support mental recovery through emotional, social, physical or motivational pathways that are not explained by ART.
Why do some breaks remain mentally demanding?
Stopping work does not automatically remove attentional demands.
Consider a break spent:
- switching between several messaging platforms;
- scrolling rapidly changing content;
- responding to comments;
- comparing products;
- following a television programme while checking a phone;
- completing household administration;
- playing a strategically demanding game.
These activities may offer relief from work-specific demands, but they can still involve attentional switching, decision-making, inhibition and continual novelty detection.
This does not mean that screens are inherently incompatible with restoration. A slow nature film, digital drawing activity or single long-form article may produce a very different attentional experience from rapid, fragmented scrolling.
The relevant question is not simply, “Is there a screen?”
A more useful question is:
What is this activity asking my attention to do?

Attention Restoration Theory does not provide a rigid protocol. It offers a framework for evaluating whether a break creates genuinely different attentional conditions.
Create a clearer sense of being away
Reduce the cues that keep the previous context active.
You might:
- close and put away the laptop;
- leave the work area;
- change the lighting;
- silence work notifications;
- step outside;
- move to a room not associated with work.

Choose gentle rather than fragmented engagement
Look for an experience that holds interest without repeatedly asking you to select, judge, respond or switch.
This could involve:
- walking without a specific performance target;
- sitting near a window;
- observing the sky or trees;
- tending to plants;
- listening to natural sounds;
- spending time in a garden;
- following a quiet, coherent activity.
Consider compatibility
Do not choose an activity simply because it is commonly described as restorative.
A walk is unlikely to help if it feels unsafe, rushed or physically uncomfortable. Gardening may be restorative for one person and another obligation for someone else.
The activity should fit your current energy, preferences and circumstances.
Remove performance pressure
Turning a restorative opportunity into another target can recreate the demands you are trying to leave.
You do not need to:
- walk a certain distance;
- finish a creative project;
- document the experience;
- achieve a measurable outcome;
- feel transformed afterwards.
Restoration is not another performance standard.
Avoid searching for a universal dose
The 2025 meta-analysis found that the largest average difference between nature and non-nature conditions appeared after approximately 30 minutes. However, the relationship was non-linear, varied by cognitive domain and showed substantial heterogeneity. Thirty minutes should not be treated as a guaranteed or necessary dose.
A shorter experience may still be worthwhile, but the available evidence does not justify one precise restorative duration for every person and outcome.
Can tactile activities restore attention?
Tactile and creative activities can create a coherent change in attentional context.
Working with paper, thread, clay or another physical material may:
- shift attention away from work cues;
- reduce competing digital interruptions;
- offer sensory interest;
- provide a defined field of engagement;
- support a sense of entering another activity;
- fit the person’s preferences.
These qualities may resemble being away, extent, compatibility or gentle fascination.
However, Attention Restoration Theory was developed primarily through research on environments, particularly nature. Evidence about natural settings cannot automatically be transferred to origami, macramé, drawing or other crafts.
It would therefore be inaccurate to claim that every tactile activity produces soft fascination or restores directed attention.
Tactile activity may support mental recovery through several different mechanisms.
How Attention Restoration Theory relates to offline rituals
An Offline Ritual is an intentional, screen-free sequence designed to mark a transition, focus attention and create a more present experience.
An offline ritual may create some conditions compatible with restoration by providing:
- distance from work cues;
- fewer interruptions;
- a coherent sequence;
- sensory engagement;
- a clear beginning and end;
- an activity chosen for personal compatibility.
The absence of screens is not itself one of the four components of Attention Restoration Theory.
An offline ritual also does not automatically restore attention. Its effects will depend on the activity, environment, individual and wider context.
