What do we mean by repetition?

This creates variation inside predictability.

That can be easier to remain with than an activity that constantly presents new decisions.

Repetition connects action with immediate feedback

Repetitive tactile activities are not only repetitive. They are also sensorimotor.

Your action changes the material, and the material provides information back.

When knotting cord, the fingers detect friction, tension and position. When folding paper, touch and vision provide information about edges and alignment. What does research actually tell us about repetition and anxiety?

The scientific evidence is more interesting—and less definitive—than the claim that “repetitive activities are relaxing”.

In a 2015 experiment, Lang and colleagues induced anxiety and measured participants’ hand movements using motion capture. Greater anxiety was associated with more repetitive and rigid movement patterns.

That result is important because it shows the direction can run from anxiety towards repetition.

In other words:

Anxiety may increase repetitive behaviour.

We therefore cannot observe someone performing a repetitive movement and automatically conclude that repetition is what made them calmer.

A later preregistered experiment by Karl and Fischer tested mechanisms including repetitive movement and cognitive load. However, stress increased repetitive behaviour, and that repetitive behaviour was associated with reduced physiological arousal within the experiment.

Decreases in subjective and physiological anxiety were larger in the ritualised condition, but the primary between-condition differences were estimated too imprecisely to support confident generalisation. An exploratory analysis suggested a clearer physiological effect among people who had experienced greater cognitive anxiety. The authors themselves emphasised the need for further evidence.

Together, these studies make repetition, rigidity and predictability plausible parts of the relationship between ritualised behaviour and anxiety.

They do not establish that:

• repetitive crafts treat anxiety;
• repetition reliably reduces cortisol or stress;
• a specific number of repetitions produces relaxation;
• repetitive movement “regulates the nervous system” in a universal way;
• every predictable activity is restorative;
• crafting reproduces the effects observed in experimental ritual research.
